Emily Bergl ’97 may be Hollywood’s most famous Grinnellian actor of her generation. Perhaps best known as Annie O’Donnell in the television show Men in Trees, Beth Young in Desperate Housewives, and Tammy Bryant in the drama series Southland, she’s also acted in movies and on stage and made guest appearances on many popular TV series.

College initiates year-long apprentice program with local nonprofits

With the start of the new academic year, Grinnell College has launched a program designed to help the college, its students, local nonprofit organizations and the entire community. Created by Monica Chavez-Silva through the Office of Community Enhancement and Engagement in cooperation with numerous other college offices, the program has chosen six apprentices interested in learning nonprofit management and placed them with six nonprofit organizations in paid positions lasting a year. Grinnell is known for graduating students with a strong sense of social justice—in fact, one part of the mission of Grinnell is to graduate women and men who “work to use their knowledge and their abilities to serve the common good.” Three Grinnell alumni, all focusing on public and international health issues as well as patient care, enrolled at the Medical School for International Health (MSIH) at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheva, Israel.

Grinnell's Fulgoni is MWC Performer of the Week

Grinnell College's Marco Fulgoni '12 (pictured) has been named the Midwest Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week. Fulgoni, from Kalamazoo, Mich. (Plainswell), had a busy and successful weekend at the Great Scot Invitational hosted by Macalester College. He was in on five event victories over the two-day meet, including first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (22.22) and 100 freestyle (49.28). He also swam legs on the first-place 200 and 400 freestyle relays (1:30.27 and 3:18.27, respectively), as well as the winning 400 medley relay (3:45.31).
