Grinnell College Art Collection

The Grinnell College Art Collection began with 28 etchings given in honor of Maude Little Macy (1845-1926) and $1,200 raised for the purchase of art during the endowment campaign of 1908. Since then, gifts, bequests, and judicious purchases with endowed acquisition funds have helped to build a collection of more than 5,000 works of art. The collection is distinguished by its social and political commentary by artists who have taken up pen and stylus as weapons against oppression, exploitation and human folly.

From Wunderkammer to the Modern Museum, 1606-1884

Curated by Florence Fearrington

Modern museums and art galleries have their origins in late Renaissance European private collections of artifacts gathered for study and admiration. This exhibition documents this fascinating intersection of science and art, and explores the shift from private repositories to public institutions. The exhibition draws on Ms. Fearrington's private collection, and was previously exhibited at Harvard's Houghton Library and The Grolier Club in New York City. Florence Fearrington is a former Trustee of the College, 2000-2008.

Exhibitions

The Faulconer Gallery presents exhibitions of regional, national, and international artists throughout the year in 7,420 square feet of state-of-the-art exhibition space at the heart of the Bucksbaum Center for the Arts. Exhibitions in the Print and Drawing Study Room and Burling Gallery, located on the lower level of Burling Library, focus on objects in the Grinnell College Art Collection as well as objects directly related to Grinnell College classes during the spring and fall semesters.
