Alumni Award
Great ability carries with it great responsibility. Susan Duffey Campbell '78 has balanced both in her work as a lawyer and as a volunteer.
Campbell was an accomplished student while at Grinnell, earning the President's Medal for her academic accomplishments. She was chair of the chemistry department's educational policies committee and a member of the curriculum committee. Two years after the Rhodes Trust allowed women to compete for its prestigious scholarship, Campbell became the first woman from an Iowa college to earn a Rhodes Scholarship. After two years at Oxford, she went on to earn a law degree from Harvard.
Campbell is currently a partner at Holme, Roberts, and Owen L.L.P., where she specializes in defense and prosecution of wrongful discharge and employment discrimination cases. She speaks nationally on employment law and litigation. At Grinnell, she has given talks on the future of volunteerism and the role of scientists as leaders.
In addition to her career responsibilities, Cambell keeps up a full slate of volunteer activities. She serves as chair for Pikes Peak Community College Advisory Council and co-chair for the board of directors at the Women's Resource Agency. She has also served as a board member for organizations including the Community Partnership for Child Development/Head Start and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Colorado Springs.
For her willingness to serve others, Grinnell is pleased to honor Susan Duffey Campbell '78.
