Students implement projects for peace

Liting Cong '11 and her partner David Wang, a Georgetown University student Liting Cong '11 and David Wang Three Grinnell College students will implement international peace projects this summer, thanks to $10,000 awards from the Davis World College Scholar Program. Davis Projects for Peace are funded by internationalist and philanthropist Kathryn Wasserman Davis, who committed $1 million to fund grassroots projects through a competition on 74 college and university campuses.

The Grinnell student peace projects are focused on efforts that will benefit the home countries of two of the student award winners.

Liting Cong '11, a Grinnell student from Shanghai, China, will collaborate with a Georgetown University student to develop a legal aid program for migrant workers in Liting's home country.

Chandara Veung '12 and Joseph Hiller '12 Chandara Veung '12 and Joseph Hiller '12 Grinnellians Chandara Veung '12 of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and Joseph Hiller '12 of Lewisburg, Penn., will develop a project to increase education access in Veung's home country of Cambodia.

Each project involves international travel and distribution of education materials and presentations in the project country during summer 2009, as well as campus presentations when the Grinnell students return from their international experiences.

The Davis Projects are designed to encourage and support motivated college students to create and implement their ideas for building peace throughout the world.
