Chasson entered senior faculty status in the summer of 2012 after teaching at Grinnell since 1980. His research focusses on the functions of decoration and illustration in medieval Latin manuscripts made for use in monasteries and cathedrals, especially in Italy and France from the 11th through the 13th centuries. Recent articles on Italian “giant” bibles from the Romanesque period have appeared in Gesta 42/2 (2003), Rivista di storia della miniatura 9 (2004), and PeciaLe livre et l'écrit 13 (2010). Chasson has co-edited, with T.J. Sienkewicz, The Power of Place. A Festschrift for Janet Goodhue Smith, Chicago: Associated Colleges of the Midwest, 2012, a volume of essays, creative literature, and translations, mostly by faculty previously associated with the ACM Florence program. Works now in progress include an essay on the representations of ancient Roman architecture in a Sistine Chapel wall painting by Botticelli and text-image relationships in the late 11th century Santa Cecilia Bible from Rome.
