Community Advisor Position Summary

The community advisor position is a live-in position within the Grinnell College residence halls. Community advisors are a part of the Division of Student Affairs team.

Under the direct supervision of the Department of Residence Life, the community advisor:

  • establishes a cohesive self-governing community in their designated area
  • facilitates the holistic development of residents through programming
  • refers and supports residents as they deal with academic and personal issues
  • addresses and abides by the policies of Grinnell College as well as Iowa state and federal laws in the College residence halls
  • participates in an on-call rotation
  • participates in and facilitates a team approach with coworkers
  • completes necessary administrative tasks

Community Advisor Selection Information and Checklist

  • Application
    • Please fill out fully to be considered.
    • Deadline is 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019.
  • Resume and Cover Letter
    • Please submit with your application. The CLS is a good place to take your resume and cover letter to be looked over.
  • Reference Form
    • You must have one professional reference and one reference from a current community advisor to accompany your application.
    • Deadline is 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019.
  • Group Process
    • Candidates will be asked to participate in one out of two provided group interview days alongside other candidates in mid-February.
  • Individual Interviews
    • Candidates will have individual interviews with residence life coordinators and current student staff in late February.
  • Offers
    • Those selected for staff will be given offers in March.

Once your application materials and reference forms have been reviewed, you will receive scheduling information regarding the group process and individual interview.

Community Advisor Application Questions

The following questions are included in the application.

  • Name in use (first and last), pronouns, Grinnell email, current class year, and current cluster.
  • Do you have intentions of studying abroad in the next year? Which semester do you plan on studying abroad?
  • Would you be open to being placed in gender-specific housing?
  • Would you be open to being placed in substance-free housing?
  • Would you like to be considered for specialty housing placements in either Norris Hall (first-year experience) or Rawson (quiet community)? Note: your selection for this question will not exclude you from being considered as a community advisor in other communities.
  • Select you top four choices for placement.
  • What led you to apply to be a community advisor and what aspects align with your strengths?
  • What aspects of the position seem challenging to you?
  • Describe your ideal residence hall community. As a community advisor, how would you foster that vision?
