Mellon Public Humanities

Mellon Presidential Grant — Connecting People through Humanities

Through a generous Presidential Grant, the Mellon Foundation will allow Grinnellians to consider how public humanities can amplify different voices and bring campus and community together.

Are you considering a project that could connect campus and community through the humanities? Limited funds are available that could help your project reach more people in new ways:

Who is eligible to apply? Any Grinnell College program or community nonprofit interested in offering public humanities programming.

What type of activities will this fund?  Funds will support a wide range of activities that amply different voices and connect campus and community through the arts, humanities, or humanistic social sciences. Examples might include lectures, talks, films, classes, exhibitions, workshops, or other types of outreach programming.  Preference will be given to proposals that will:

  • engage and involve a general audience
  • connect campus and community
  • offer insights into engaging public programming

How much may I apply for? Grants typically range from $500 to $5,000.

What expenses can be covered? Mellon will cover most program expenditures (such as honoraria, travel, lodging, staffing, printing, supplies). Please note: Mellon will not pay for food or equipment.

How often are requests reviewed? Requests are reviewed on a rolling basis by the grant review committee as they are received.

What if my idea doesn’t exactly meet these criteria? Share your idea anyway! There may be additional funding sources that might be able to support other kinds of humanities and community engagement. Contact Community Partnerships, Planning, and Research with questions and ideas.
