- Students may apply for multiple Special Residence Draws (SRD) with the same group; however, you must have all available spots full. SRD groups need to be consistent and one individual cannot be a member of two SRD groups. Do not apply for a SRD if you are planning to take a leave of absence during the fall term. Students currently on leave (during the spring term) must be officially approved to return to campus for the fall term before the application deadline to be eligible to apply for any SRD.
- All rooms/spaces must be filled the entire year. Students studying abroad or planning to graduate in December must fill out the SRD form completely with all residents for both semesters.
- Any SRD not applied for or not accepted will be available at Room Draw.
- Cats and dogs are not permitted in any residence hall, including all SRD (with the exception of medical accommodation). Please see the pet policy for more information.
Seniority Draw Award Process
Mini co-ops, Haines four-room triples, Cowles quads, and Cowles apartments are all awarded on a seniority draw or “point” system. The group with the highest point total is awarded the SRD for which their group applied (see table below). In the event of a tie between multiple groups, the award will be based on a random drawing between all tied groups. Note to applicants using our room split process: The class status of the student on campus in the fall will be used.
CLASS STATUS | POINTS AWARDED |
---|---|
SR1 | 7 |
JR2 | 6 |
JR1 | 5 |
SO2 | 4 |
SO1 | 3 |
FR2 | 2 |
FR1 | 1 |
Example:
APPLICATION 1 | APPLICATION 2 |
---|---|
JR2 = 6 pts | SR1 = 7 pts |
JR2 = 6 pts | JR2 = 6 pts |
SO2 = 4 pts | JR2 = 6 pts |
FR2 = 2 pts | FR1 = 1 pt |
TOTAL = 18 pts | TOTAL = 20 pts |
Application 2 would be awarded the seniority draw.
Random Draw Award Process
The coordinator’s name of each group applying for a random draw will be written on a piece of paper and placed in a container; one name will be randomly drawn. The coordinator drawn first will receive their first choice of room (based on rankings provided on the application). The coordinator drawn next will receive their first choice of room, if available. If their first choice is not available, they will be awarded their second choice, and so on. This process will be followed until each random draw room is filled.
If a group is drawn and all room preferences provided on their application have been assigned, the group will not receive a draw. Groups will only be assigned a room they have ranked as a preference.
Cowles Apartments, Cowles Quads, and Mini Co-ops
Cowles apartments, Cowles quads, and mini co-ops are gender-inclusive and are awarded on a seniority draw system (see above). Students considering taking a leave of absence for the upcoming fall term should not apply for a SRD. Students awarded a SRD do not participate in Room Draw. Students awarded a SRD who are also on the off-campus waitlist must have an alternate to fill their space before they may accept an offer to live off-campus.
Each group must designate a group coordinator. The coordinator must:
- Submit a completed Special Residence Draw Application to the Department of Residence Life by the application deadline.
- Reply to the SRD email offer (if awarded a SRD) by the deadline.
- Submit room assignments to the Department of Residence Life by the acceptance deadline (which will be included in the SRD email offer).
Cowles Apartments
Apartments have a first floor and a loft (second floor) level. Six apartments (each with its own kitchen, bathroom, and common room) are available for application. Students awarded a Cowles apartment have one additional meal plan option to consider. Please see the Dining Services Dining Plans web page for more information.
