Pedagogical Goals

  • To familiarize students with a substantial and diverse body of texts in English or that inform English-language literary works
  • To enable student to analyze texts from a range of critical and theoretical perspectives
  • To train students in the techniques of academic research in English
  • To develop the skills that contribute to persuasive argumentation and stylistic elegance
  • To develop in students the skill required to contribute by creative expression to the traditions they study
  • To familiarize students with the theories and practices of inter- or multidisciplinary scholarship
  • To have each English major develop proficiency in reading literature in at least one language other than English
  • To develop in students the skills of revision and rigorous self-criticism
