Careers in Education Opportunities
We bring a number of incredible speakers to campus every semester. Most recently, Ed Pros members have been lucky to hear from Emily Miller, from Eyes Open Iowa, about the importance of comprehensive sex education; and Wes Moore, author of The Other Wes Moore and The Work: Finding a Life that Matters, about following your passions. Last semester, we were lucky enough to welcome Ryan Wise, the new director of Iowa Department of Education. In the past, Ed Pros has brought members of the Iowa State Education Association to speak about the importance of teacher unions. We provide a wide range of opportunities to appeal to all facets of education. Check the Upcoming Events page for details about upcoming speakers.
Students are encouraged to attend the education-related workshops that are held frequently throughout the semester. Some past workshop topics include: “Teaching Abroad,” “Alternative Paths to Teaching,” “Beyond the Classroom: Graduate School Programs in Education,” “Finding an Education-Related Summer Job,” and “Interviewing with Teach for America.”
Internships and Externships
Students interested in participating in an education-related internship are encouraged to attend one of the “Finding an Internship” or Grinnellink workshops offered every semester. For more information about these workshops, the opportunities available, and internship funding, please visit the Internship page on the Center for Careers, Life, and Service website. You can also request an appointment with Megan Crawford, Assistant Director of Career Development and Internship Coordinator, or with Kelly Guilbeau, Grinnell’s Internship Coordinator.
Trips and Past Events
In Fall of 2014, Ashley Schaefer and Kathryn Wegner took a cohort of 12 students to visit a variety of schools and education-related non-profits in the Chicago area. Students were able to observe in a number of diverse classrooms and meet with students from our sister program at University of Chicago. It was a great opportunity to engage with different elements of a career in education.
During Fall Break of 2015, Ashley took a group of Ed Pros students to visit different schools and non-profits in the Minneapolis area. Ed Pros members were able to make connections and engage with contacts in the area. Several students even found their placement for Student Teaching while on the trip!
Careers in Education is currently planning a trip to South Africa in the summer of 2017. The trip will be in conjunction with a class taught by a visiting professor from South Africa about the South African education system. Students interested in applying should look out for upcoming updates!
The Ignite Program allows Grinnell College students to design and teach courses related to their passions. Students can get hands-on experience creating and facilitating a lesson plan. Children from the community in PreK-6th grade are invited to take part in the Ignite Program and learn more about being in college in a small, liberal arts institution. For more information about Ignite, please visit our website.
