May 6, 2019: Trustees Vote Regarding Union Expansion

During the annual spring meeting of the Board of Trustees, administration provided Board members with updates on the work to explore the potential to selectively expand the student dining union by including a limited number of additional student positions. The briefing for the Board included a summary of discussions to date with representatives of the Union of Grinnell Student Dining Workers (UGSDW). After thorough discussion, the Board determined that given the complexity of the issues, it needed more time to deliberate the implications of student union expansion. Consequently, the Board unanimously voted on a motion that directed the administration to suspend talks over voluntary selective expansion of the UGSDW bargaining unit pending further discussion by the Board at its October 2019 meeting.

April 2, 2019: Update on Possible Selective Expansion of the UGSDW

In his Feb. 21, “Moving Ahead” communication to campus members and alumni, President Raynard S. Kington put forward the potential for possible selective expansion of the UGSDW. Subsequently, President Kington has had communications with UGSDW about how and when they might initiate discussions about the parameters of any unit expansion.

In preparation for such discussions, College staff have been working to assess all paid experiential learning positions on campus not currently represented in the union, to identify those that might be considered for possible inclusion in an expanded UGSDW bargaining unit. This assessment is a high-priority for the College; however, it has taken more time than initially anticipated.

With spring break over and classes once again underway, the intent is to share position assessments and the criteria used for analysis soon. In the meantime, President Kington has communicated his willingness to set up a status update meeting with UGSDW leadership.

Future updates on union-related matters will be noted in weekly campus memos and posted on this website, as appropriate.
