Grinnell Filmmakers

Filmmakers with any connection to Grinnell College are invited to join Grinnell Filmmakers. We define filmmakers as those who work in film and television. Members includes writers, directors, producers, editors, actors, musicians, and all others who work in pre-production, production, or post-production. The group's goal is to provide filmic storytellers a bridge from the Iowa cornfields to the the screens of the world. Membership is by request only. We will need to contact you about your Grinnell affiliation prior to admission.

  • UbuWeb is a completely independent resource dedicated to all strains of the avant-garde, ethnopoetics, and outsider arts.
  • The Bijou Theater. Housed at the University of Iowa (an hour drive from Grinnell), the Bijou Cinema is a non-profit, student-run cinema screening independent, art house, foreign, and classic cinema. Established in 1972, the Bijou Cinema has built a reputation as one of the preeminent student-run theaters in the nation.

  • Landlocked Film Festival. A competitive festival celebrating its fifth birthday in August 2011, Landlocked presents independent movies from around the world. Thousands of audience members gather in Iowa City’s historic downtown to watch diverse films, from two minutes to two hours long, from artsy experimentation to outrageous comedy, from heartwarming family stories to heartbreaking drama, from hard-hitting documentary to music video to amazing animation.
  • The Hardacre Film Festival in Tipton, Iowa, is one of the few precious opportunities those of us in our region of the Midwest have to screen truly independent and underground cinema. One of the primary goals of the Hardacre Film Festival is to bring a diverse selection of cutting-edge independent motion pictures to an Eastern Iowa audience who otherwise would not have an opportunity to view these films.
