ACTION REQUIRED: Shift in COVID-19 Related Protocols on Campus Effective Today April 15

April 15, 2022

Dear Grinnellians,

We have recently seen an increase in COVID-19 cases on campus. Due to this uptick in case counts, we are shifting to a modified blue activity level effective today in which masking is required indoors. All campus events will continue, and visitors are still allowed on campus.

Mask Usage

Effective today—Friday, April 15—all members of our campus community and visitors will be required to mask while indoors in shared spaces regardless of vaccination status. There are a few exceptions to wearing a mask indoors outlined below:

  • While eating

  • Faculty, staff, and students do not need to wear masks in a closed space when they are the only one present

Due to their availability and high standard of protection, N95, KN95, or KF94 masks are required for students, faculty, and staff. Other types of masks, including cloth masks, no longer meet masking requirements. The College continues to make available high quality KN95 masks to those who want to wear them. They may be picked up at the following locations:

Student Affairs Suite JRC 3rd Floor

Employees and Emeriti Faculty

HSSC Support Office A1234, Noyce Support Office 1232, Burling Circulation Desk, Bear Athletic Center Equipment Room F024, and Bucksbaum Support Office 162, HR 3rd floor Mears Cottage and Campus Safety 1st floor Mears Cottage.

The College health insurance plan now covers up to eight over-the-counter at-home tests per month (up to $12 per test). Tests can be purchased at most in-network pharmacies – you can view in-network pharmacies here. We recommend this option as the College supplies are limited at this time.

  • If you purchase a test at an in-network pharmacy counter, they can bill Wellmark directly.

  • If you purchase a test from an out-of-network pharmacy or at a regular checkout counter, you must pay out of pocket and then submit a reimbursement request.

  • Contact Wellmark Customer Service at (800) 800-5122 with questions.

Test Iowa PCR Tests – Note Change in Courier Days
The Test Iowa home PCR kit pick-up and drop-off is the best option to use 3-5 days after a known or suspected exposure. Change in Courier Service Days: The College will no longer be sending a courier on Wednesdays and Sundays due to a decreased demand on those days. Courier pick-up days and times are now Mon., Tues., Thurs., and Fri. at 10 a.m. and Sat at 8 a.m. The secure drop box is available at the JRC Information Desk.

SHAW Walk-In Clinic – for symptomatic testing only
Students experiencing mild symptoms can visit the SHAW walk-in clinic Monday – Friday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Those with more severe symptoms should contact SHAW 641-269-3230 to schedule an appointment. After hours, contact Campus Safety.

Safety and Community

Campus community members experiencing COVID-19 symptoms should refer to the student protocols or employee protocols for more information on testing and isolation requirements.  We recommend that anyone who tests positive notify people who have an exposure*, and those on campus should follow our protocols for exposure for facultystaff, and students.

We will continue to monitor the community level and campus cases. There may be times when increased precautions could become necessary again. If that happens you will receive an email with additional information. We will continue the isolation guidelines for people who test positive while we assess the campus and local COVID-19 trends.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out via email at
