CDC Coronavirus Guidelines Implemented on Campus

February 06, 2020

Dear Grinnellians,

We write with the goal of keeping the entire campus community informed about the rapidly evolving international public health emergency around the coronavirus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is continually revising its guidelines for responding to the coronavirus, with the most recent revisions coming out yesterday. Currently, the CDC calls for a 14-day special assessment of individuals following arrival in the United States if they have come from or traveled through China.

We are currently working with two Grinnell students whose circumstances fall within the parameters of the CDC’s guidelines. We have been in contact with Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) officials and are following all CDC and IDPH recommendations and guidelines.

To be clear, neither of the students has shown symptoms typical of the coronavirus. However, out of an abundance of caution, both students agreed to be temporarily housed in a private College residence per CDC guidelines. We will continue to monitor their health and well-being during this waiting period.

Academic Affairs and Student Affairs staff have contacted faculty and staff members who teach, supervise, or otherwise work closely with these students, as is our normal practice, to coordinate any special arrangements or support needed to ensure that these circumstances do not compromise their studies and other campus activities.

We want to reiterate our support for all members of our college community, and especially for Grinnellians who may be understandably worried about family and friends abroad.

If you develop flu-like symptoms, please consult with a Student Health And Wellness (SHAW) nurse by calling 641/269-3230. SHAW is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you become ill after hours or on the weekend, call SHAW and consult with our after-hours nurse. If you feel you need to seek immediate after-hours treatment and do not have transportation to the local Walk-In Clinic or ER, call Campus Safety at 641/269-4600 to request a ride to the local hospital.

Please contact us with any questions or concerns.

Thank you.
