As a German/classics double major, Rehan found his passion and dove in. This dedicated student takes advantage of the opportunities available to him at Grinnell.

Throughout the course, students apply a multimedia focus to study current events in Germany and its neighboring countries. Through this multimedia lens, you will cultivate an understanding of how those events shape your thinking about similar trends in the United States.

Intersectionality examines the interconnected nature of social groups such as race, class, and gender, which often overlap with other marginalized groups to create an individual experience of discrimination and oppression. It is within this context that German Feminist Literature (GRM 295) explores feminist writings with a focus on Black and Jewish writers.

German Studies 270 examines the ways the Holocaust is remembered through works of literature, film, memorials, and personal testimony, both privately and collectively.

Martin Pollack ’22 worked with DASIL to create a series of seminars on Python and machine learning based on knowledge he gained in internships.

This year’s Writing in Residence is Rasha Khayat, a German novelist, essayist, and translator.

The Writers@Grinnell series continues with award winning authors, Saskya Jain and Christopher Kloeble.

Vance Byrd, associate professor and chair of German studies, will further his education and launch a new research project as a New Directions Fellowship recipient.

Nicholas Haeg ’20 was part of a group of faculty and student researchers from Grinnell College and Yale University that dispersed over the European continent during summer 2018 to document country-by-country both the remembrance and the revisionism that surround the Holocaust.

Dan Reynolds, Seth Richards Professor in Modern Languages, will present his reflections on visits to Holocaust memorials and museums, the topic of his recent book Postcards from Auschwitz: Holocaust Tourism and the Meaning of Remembrance.
