Assistant Professor

Personal

Patrick Inglis is assistant professor of Sociology at Grinnell College. He is currently finishing a book manuscript, entitled Upward Servility: Getting By and Falling Behind in the New India, which will be published with Oxford University Press in 2018. The book tracks the social mobility prospects of a collection of poor and mostly lower-caste golf caddies who work at the side of wealthy members at private golf clubs in Bangalore, India. A second project will address the increasing role of philanthropy in the private education of poor children in India, South Africa, and the United States. In addition to research, Patrick teaches core courses in the major, including Introduction to Sociology and Contemporary Sociological Theory, as well as courses in political economy, global development, and labor.
