Gary L. Caldwell grew up in Ottumwa, Iowa. Following his high school graduation, Gary spent the next seven years in the United States Marine Corps. He graduated from the Marine Non-Commissioned Officers Academy, and also completed many courses from the Marine Corps Institute. After life in the military, Gary worked in law enforcement and corrections at various levels of government including, a jailer for Mahaska County, Chief of Police for Eddyville, and a Correctional Officer for the State of Iowa. He began working for Grinnell College in 2016. Gary enjoys spending his free time with his wife, golfing, and target shooting.

Officer Caldwell enjoys working at Grinnell College, and the wide range of tasks and responsibilities he’s expected to perform. He desires to demonstrate to students that officers are on campus to keep them safe, and are approachable for a conversation or to get assistance. 

Officer Caldwell’s primary responsibility at Grinnell College is ensuring the safety of the campus community through patrol operations, incident response, and calls for service.

The department of Campus Safety, 641-269-4600, plans and implements safety operations, programs, and initiatives in support of the College’s mission and vision. Located on the corner of East Street and 10th Avenue, Campus Safety is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, even when school is not in session.
