What I Do
Lead, coordinate, and facilitate the work of a diverse and committed staff of individuals in the offices of Admission and Financial Aid. I am a member of President Raynard Kington's senior staff and attend a number of meetings where we discuss how to create the best possible experience for students at Grinnell. My favorite part of my job is interacting with prospective students and their parents.
What I Did
I spent my childhood in Zanesville, Ohio before moving to Kentucky where I later attended Berea College. I earned a masters degree in student personnel services for higher education and recently completed coursework for a Ph.D. in Educational Policy Students and Evaluation at the University of Kentucky. Prior to coming to Grinnell in 2012, I served as Dean of Enrollment and Academic Services, Associate Provost, and Director of Admissions (not all at once) for Berea College in Kentucky. My oldest daughter enrolled at Grinnell in 2011 and had such a terrific first year experience that we followed her here!
What I Love
My kids. Music. Sports. The work and writings of Marcus Borg. Advocates for peace and justice at the local, regional, national, and international levels. My alma mater. The people I work with at Grinnell. A worthy cause. A pretty picture. A novel restaurant. The chicken little sandwich (with dragon fire sauce) at The Dragon Wagon. Uncommon courage; the kind demonstrated in movies like Braveheart, Cinderella Man, Saving Private Ryan. A soft pillow. My parents, siblings, cousins. Tift Merritt, Josh Groban, James Taylor, Celine Dion, Eva Cassidy, fields of gold. Owsley Fork under a full moon. Anna and the King. A game of pool before bed. Pizza with chopped cilantro (thrown on after it comes out of the oven). Tremont on Main. Creating transformative opportunities for college students, especially the first generation, low-income variety.
