Personal

Jan Gross is Seth Richards Professor in Modern Languages with Senior Faculty Status. She earned a B.A. in French from the University of Michigan, an M.A. from Ohio State, and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Romance Languages and Literatures with a dissertation on contemporary productions of Molière. Her research focus on theatre's potential for "imagining the Other" highlights the French-Algerian relationship, including interviews with Algerian playwrights living in Paris (Slimane Benaïssa, Mohamed Kacimi, Aziz Chouaki, Fellag, and Fatima Gallaire). Publications in Theatre Journal, Modern Drama, French Review, and other essays examine the role of terrorism, postcolonial identities, exile, Islam, and the influence of Albert Camus. Her translation with Daniel Gross of Slimane Benaïssa's novel, The Last Night of a Damned Soul (Grove Press, 2004) was one of the first works of fiction on 9/11 to be penned by a Muslim author. Her current work explores the local-global connection between Elkader, Iowa and Algerian military and spiritual leader, the Emir Abd el-Kader.  Her book project, "Performing Out of Islam," illustrates how contemporary French theatre serves as a site for interreligious dialogue.
