Joyce Stern has been working to support Grinnellians since 1999. Her role includes directing the college’s advising program, co-coordinating the Grinnell Science Project and the Tutorial (first-year seminar program), and serving on the Committee on Academic Standing. She believes that all Grinnell students come wtih the capability to be successful but sometimes get derailed, so she leads a team that identifies and reaches out to students experiencing academic difficulty to offer support, resources and assistance to get back on track. She also supervises the College's coordinator of disablity resource, the learning specialist, and the administrative assistant, all of whom are integral parts of the advising and student success team.
Stern graduated from Grinnell in 1991 and completed an M.A. in higher education administration at Stanford University. Her work in residence life and career development includes experience at Lawrence University (residence director), California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo (coordinator of student development), Scripps College (career counselor), and Coe College (director of career services). At Grinnnell she can sometimes be spotted in the Bear doing aikido or swimming.
