Chief Diversity Officer, AVP of Diversity & Inclusion, and Senior Advisor to the President

Schvalla R. Rivera, Ph.D., CDE, has been appointed Chief Diversity Officer, Associate Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion, and Senior Advisor to the President at Grinnell College. Dr. Rivera formerly served as the assistant to the president for diversity and inclusion at Southern Utah University. She started her role at Grinnell on July 1, 2020.

Prior to assuming her current leadership role, Rivera served as the dean of students at Western Nebraska Community College and before that was the assistant dean of students and director of intercultural life at Cornell College. Rivera comes with 15 years of experience in higher education administration in fields such as residence life, multicultural student affairs, international student affairs, and academic advising. 

Rivera holds a B.A. in social science from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, an M.S. in political science and a Ph. D. in curriculum and instruction from Indiana State University. She is a Certified Diversity Executive and has collaborated with executive leadership to create institutional diversity policies and respond to bias-related incidents. 

At the College, Rivera will contribute to strategic discussions and play a central role advocating for and championing a comprehensive institutional strategy around all matters of equity and inclusion. She will also lead the College in exploring issues of purpose, responsibility, and justice on campus and beyond by providing leadership, management, and strategic planning for diversity and inclusion initiatives.
