Where are you from? (Grew up – hometown?)
I grew up in New Carlisle, a small town in Southwest Ohio, not far from the border with Indiana.
What do you like best about Grinnell College?
I value Grinnell’s sense of community, and its academic rigor. It tends to attract students who’re pretty serious about their education.
Where did you attend school? College(s)? Degrees?
I got my B.A. in Communications (Print Journalism) at American University in Washington, D.C. I have my M.F.A. from the University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop, where I concentrated on fiction writing.
What are your main areas of responsibility here at Grinnell College?
I’m the staff person in charge of support for the College’s Debate Union—its oldest student group—and its club sports program. I also occasionally teach classes in the Humanities Division. I’m also a board member at the College’s Center for Prairie Studies.
What do you like to do in your free time? Hobbies?
I publish poetry and fiction, have one book in print, and am currently trying to finish a novel. I also run a book-editing business (Iowa Book Doctors), am engaged in the seemingly endless renovation of a 1880s house, and have two very active young daughters I do my best to keep up with.
