Valérie Benoist holds a Ph.D. in Spanish from Emory University and is an associate professor. She teaches for the Spanish Department as well as for the Latin American Studies Concentration and has served as chair of both. Her research centers on Latin American colonial literature, and in particular on gender and race construction. Her most recent publications have been on the representation of blackness in indigenous writers such as Guaman Poma de Ayala. She is currently working on a book project on the representation of black nuns in colonial Mexico, Peru, and Spain. Her works have been published in journals such as Estudios de Cultura Nahuatl, Latin American Theater Review, Revista de Estudios Hispanicos, Letras Femeninas, Moenia, and Afro-Hispanic Review.
