Conner Andrea
Associate Vice President of Student Affairs

Where are you from?  (Grew up – hometown?)
I'm originally from Glidden, IA, a small farming town in the western part of the state.

What do you like best about Grinnell College?
I appreciate how engaged the students are in the governance of the institution. Students are paying attention to how the College works, and I love that, because I think we put their experience at the forefront and listen to their opinions more carefully since they are deeply invested. Also, I work with some committed, lovely people in the Division of Student Affairs and they make me proud every day.

Where did you attend school?  College(s)?  Degrees?
I earned my Bachelors degree at Coe College in music and theater.  I earned my Masters degree from Iowa State University in higher education administration/student affairs.

What are your main areas of responsibility here at Grinnell College?
As Associate Vice President, I lead the Division of Student Affairs and oversee the different departments, programs, and staff therein.  This includes the Dean of Students, Residence Life and Orientation, Campus Center/Student Activities, International Student Affairs, Student Assistance, Wellness, Student Health and Counseling Services, Religious Life, and Campus Safety and Security.  We collaborate with Academic Affairs to cultivate a cohesive model of student learning, both inside the classroom and in our residential community.  I participate in the College's governance and contribute to our over-arching efforts to increase student success and well-being.

We currently (spring 2015) are searching for a new Dean of Students, so in this time period I also oversee our student conduct process, emergency/crisis response, and general student support.

What do you like to do in your free time?  Hobbies?
I have a busy and happy family life with my partner, toddler, mom, three dogs, and two cats in one house. My avenues for rejuvenation include the arts (especially live music and musical theater), traveling (best trip so far: Cuba), dance parties with my kid, boating, singing, and home renovations.
