Michael Conner

Conner Mike
Digital Liberal Arts Specialist

Mike has been working with technology in teaching and learning at Grinnell since 2004. He completed an MA in Applied Linguistics/Teaching English as a Second Language in 2002, specializing in Computer Assisted Language Learning. Rather than launching a career of teaching English abroad, he was drawn to the promise and intrigue of technology. He began exploring this field as the Director of the Culpepper Language Lab at Gustavus Adolphus College then came to Grinnell to support the Humanities. Through many years and several title changes he has broadened his scope to support the academic technology needs of all academic departments. Being at an institution like Grinnell and working across many disciplines has afforded the opportunity to acquire a substantial depth and breadth of technology skills. Mike's primary areas of expertise are programming for the Digital Liberal Arts, web development, server administration, and high quality media production, encoding, and delivery. He has partnered with many faculty to apply these skills to create or enhance learning opportunities. The applications he finds most interesting are those where the technology allows us to see the subject matter from a different perspective, illuminates a feature that's invisible without the computational power, or allows learners to engage with the subject matter in a more tangible or personal way.
