Steve coordinates the nomination and selection process for students and alumni who are applying for national fellowships and scholarships (e.g., Fulbright, Goldwater, Truman, UK scholarships, Watson) as well as certain Grinnell-specific scholarships and awards.
Originally from Central Kentucky, Steve came to Grinnell in 2012 after having spent portions of the last three decades in Upstate New York, Western Japan, Southeastern Wales, and Central Illinois. In his work with fellowship and scholarship advising in the CLS, he preaches a mantra of intentionality, which first requires that you know yourself and your strengths, values, and goals. He holds degrees in Asian studies and religious studies (BA, Cornell University); business administration (MBA, University of Wales, as a Rotary Ambassadorial Fellow); East Asian studies (MA, University of Illinois); and educational organization and leadership (PhD, University of Illinois).
If you want to see Steve really excited, ask him about any of the following: baroque opera, British cheese, Japanese pilgrimage, his favorite typeface. One of the reasons he loves working at Grinnell College is that kindred spirits actually do occasionally ask him about these things!
