Angela Winburn

Alumni Engagement Coordinator

Angela oversees a new program that integrates alumni into select courses across the curriculum, where they provide salient examples of how liberal arts educations can equip Grinnell students with the requisite perspectives and skills to live, learn, and work with meaning and purpose. Through this Grinnell College Innovation Fund–sponsored initiative, Angela also provides faculty and staff with outlets for exploring new and innovative pedagogies in the classroom. She dually reports to the Center for Careers, Life, and Service and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Angela has been at Grinnell for 14 years, mostly as an academic support assistant in Steiner Hall, and joined the CLS and DAR teams in July 2014.

Angela was born in Grinnell and grew up on a farm southeast of town. After a time in New York City, Angela returned to Grinnell with her son in 2000 to live in the farmhouse of her youth. She notes, though, that she does not live with her parents; they retired and moved to town long ago. Angela is a first-generation college graduate of the University of Iowa.

The farm of Angela’s childhood continues today as a family-run farm. Angela raises a variety of livestock, including sheep, goats, and horses, although her primary enterprise is raising turkeys. Angela is an active advocate for creating local food systems and recently co-founded an organization that connects Grinnell-area consumers with local growers and producers.
