Princess Joseph ’25, an independent studies major from St. Lucia, was honored for her leadership and community engagement both on campus and in the broader Grinnell community.
What began as a summer side project in 2020 grew into a yearslong collaborative study in the Lafontant laboratory. Now, Lafontant, professor of biology, is proud to have his name listed after not one, but four, Grinnell alums on a paper published in Zebrafish.

Since 2002, the Grinnell College mini-grants program has supported community organizations with grants ranging from $1,000 to $7,500, for local initiatives to enhance the quality of life in our community by addressing issues of importance to the campus and community at large.
Five teams of students pitched social innovation solutions at the Spark Challenge in April, 2024. They competed for cash prizes and the opportunity to win an implementation grant for their community partner or campus partner. Funding for the program is offered by the Wilson Center for Innovation and Leadership.
