Bachelor of Arts Exhibition prizes awarded at Grinnell College Museum of Art
Art students awarded $4,300 in prizes at BAX opening reception
The 2024 Bachelor of Arts Exhibition (BAX), which features 61 works in the creative arts by 25 Grinnell College art students, opened on Friday, April 18, in the Grinnell College Museum of Art. The exhibition will be on view through May 20.
Grinnell alum Luther Davis ’93 served as the exhibition juror for BAX 2024. Davis is a Master Printer and the Printshop Director of Powerhouse Arts in New York City. He also teaches at Parsons School of Design, and was co-founder of Forth Estate, a fine art publisher focused on producing limited editions with emerging artists. Davis collaborates with around 80 artists and prints 300 unique projects each year. He selected and presented the following awards:
Inez Louise Henely ’14 Best in Show Award:

Tammy J. Zywicki Memorial Prize for Photography:

Louis Glenn Zirkle Memorial Prize for Sculpture:
- Stella Lowery ’24, The Doll-Woman (An Object of Controversy), 2024, Mixed media
Inez Louise Henely ’14 Jurors’ Merit Awards:
- Jenara Kim-Prieto ’24, Gonzalita, 2023, Oil on canvas
- Ivan Kwei ’24, Gaze, 2024, Screenprint with marker on paper
- Georgia Carbone ’24, Daily Performances, 2023, Watercolor, ink, and pencil on paper
- Norah Leahy ’24, The Nightstand Project, 2024, Wood sculptural installation
Film & Media Studies Moving Image Award:
- Alina Ihnatesku ’26, Gridlock, 2024, Digital animation coded with Processing
Matthew Kluber, Chair of the Studio Art Department, announced the two students who received prizes from the studio art department for their portfolios:
- Third-Year Art Prize: Philomena Frasca ’25
- Fourth-Year Art Prize: Stella Lowery ’24
Two purchase awards were also announced. The Office of Student Affairs selected Animals on the Block by Kathlyn Vermeulen and the Student Government Association chose I Have Two Swans Inside of Me by Sophia Youngdahl. Both works will be installed in the Rosenfield Campus Center, which is named after Grinnell alum Joe Rosenfield ‘25.
A team of seven Grinnell College students worked closely with Milton Severe, GCMoA Director of Exhibition Design, to organize this year’s BAX Exhibition. Chaired by Georgia Carbone ’24 and Stella Lowery ’24, the 2024 committee also includes Philomena Frasca ’25, Ivan Kwei ’24, Alina Ihnatesku ’26, Nora Leahy ’24 , and Karis McCaskill ’24.
