Date/Time: Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 4:15 p.m.

Location: Burling First Floor Lounge

Please join the Grinnell College Libraries at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, as we continue our Faculty/Staff Research Series with Tim Hammond, associate dean for health and wellness and director of student health promotion. Hammond will present his Research Unbound talk, “Providing a Central Source for Public Paddling in Iowa.” He will talk about The Iowa River Directory, a database of Iowa rivers that he has created with help from the Digital Liberal Arts Collaborative (DLAC). This database will provide basic quantitative facts about the rivers and references to paddling sources for the rivers. Refreshments will be served.

Hammond is in his 17th year at Grinnell College. He serves as the associate dean for health and wellness and director of student health promotion. From 2021–23, he also served as interim lecturer and director of the Grinnell Outdoor Recreation Program. In the first 14 years, he was the associate head coach of women’s and men’s swimming and diving, natatorium coordinator, and director of intramural sports, with two semesters as the interim director of GORP as well. In the spring of 2016, he was named one of the Ugandan National Coaches to train and accompany Joshua Tibatemwa ’18 to the Rio Olympics.

Prior to his work at Grinnell, Hammond translated and interpreted safety information and taught employment and manufacturing skills at various organizations. He taught and directed environmental education programs at Northern Illinois University, at Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center in Minnesota, on the Soundwaters in Long Island Sound, and at Blackhawk Girl Scout Camp in Wisconsin.

Hammond also taught bilingual kindergarten and chemistry in Spanish while overseeing the Postville Community School District’s Hispanic academic assistance program. He grew up on a farm just east of Grinnell.

Hammond graduated from Luther College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in health and minors in K-12 health education, Spanish, and environmental studies. He also holds a graduate certificate in public health from the University of Iowa and an M.B.A. with an emphasis in sustainability from Maharishi International University.

Hammond is guided in his work by modern ecofeminism and the socioecological model of health. This model describes how all aspects of society impact each individual’s wellness and how our wellness impacts all levels of society, as well as the various models of the wellness wheel and how each aspect of our lives impacts all other aspects of our lives.
