Marc Reed, Interim Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer (CDIO) at Grinnell College has been appointed to the position on a permanent basis. He has served in an interim capacity since September 12, 2022.  He previously served as Associate Chief Diversity Officer for Staff Equity.

“Marc’s leadership during the 2022-23 academic year was exemplary. He has been an integral part of the Senior Leadership Team at Grinnell and a partner for the highly skilled professional staff in the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,” said President Anne Harris.  “Leadership continuity and organizational stability are critical for this work, and I am pleased that he has agreed to serve as CDIO on an ongoing basis.”

Marc has supported and led the pursuit of equity and social justice through developing and implementing DEI strategic plans, resulting in increased representation and engagement of individuals from under-represented identities within several organizations. Currently, he is implementing a framework to establish sustainable change and development to organizational DEI.

During the 2022-23 academic year, under Marc’s leadership, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion was able to launch employee resource groups for faculty and staff to build community and integrate their voices into the Grinnell College community.  The office also expanded the Staff Equity Advocate program, which empowers staff members with skill and authority to ensure that the college has equitable hiring processes.  Their team has also worked to establish metrics that demonstrate the effectiveness of initiatives and programs, such as the Intercultural Development Inventory and a three-level training program to improve cultural competency.  In collaboration with the Office of Community Partnerships, Planning, and Research, the two departments were able to develop Community Action Groups.

“I am grateful for the support, skill, and commitment of the entire staff in the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and look forward to working with this exceptional team to listen, learn, and implement strategies that authentically represent the care and concerns of Grinnell’s current and future community,” said Reed.

Marc is a licensed Qualified Administrator for the Intercultural Development Inventory and has earned a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace Certificate from the University of South Florida. Marc holds a master’s degree in Management with a concentration in Organizational Diversity and Inclusion Leadership from the University of Dubuque.

When he is not working to impact DEI, Marc enjoys traveling, volunteering in the community, attending church, and attending sporting events with his wife Nicole, sons Marc and Cevin, and daughter Carmen.
