Six Grinnell College seniors have received scholarships from the College's oldest surviving organization, the Ladies Education Society.

The 2019-20 Ladies Education Society scholarship recipients are:

  • Elizabeth (Lizzy) Hinman ’20, a political science and theatre/dance major from Asheville, North Carolina
  • Molly Stone ’20, an English and theatre/dance major with a global development studies concentration from Granada Hills, California
  • Allie Pearce ’20, a political science major with American studies and policy studies concentrations from Iowa City, Iowa
  • Alyssa Hyndman ’20, a biology major from Clarksville, Indiana
  • Maly Marsters ’20, a studio art and classics major with a linguistics concentration from Basking Ridge, New Jersey
  • Jamie Friedman ’20, a political science and computer science major from Weston, Connecticut

The society annually awards scholarships to female students on the basis of academic excellence, character, leadership, financial need and demonstrated character and purpose through their leadership and participation in community service.

The Ladies Education Society was established in 1862 to grant educational loans to encourage young women to pursue a college education at Grinnell College. In 1914, in addition to the loans offered, the society established a scholarship to be awarded annually to a single young woman. Over time, as the endowment has grown, the single scholarship has been replaced by multiple awards to senior women.

Officers of the LES Board are:

  • Dr. Peter Daniolos, president;
  • Jan Gross, acting president;
  • Harriet Adelberg, vice president;
  • Leslie Lyons, secretary;
  • Lynn Cavanagh, treasurer; and
  • Sue Drake, historian.

Daniolos, spouse of Grinnell College President Raynard S. Kington, fulfills the original tradition of inviting the college president’s spouse to serve as president of LES. For the third consecutive year, he hosted the fall tea, where scholarship recipients were honored and had the opportunity to network with LES officers and members.
