The next opera in the Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD program, Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème, will be streamed at 11:30 a.m. Saturday,  Feb. 24, in the Harris Center Cinema.

Jennifer Williams Brown, director of the Collegium Musicum and associate professor of music at Grinnell, will deliver the opera talk at 11 a.m. in the Harris Center Cinema. Brown is a specialist in the history and performance of Baroque music, particularly 17th century Italian opera.

Hailed as “the world’s most popular opera,” by the Met, La Bohème is a timeless love story about young artists in Paris. This iteration is set in Paris in the 1830s, a city shocked by revolution, war, and the upheaval of traditions.

Marco Armiliato conducts. Sonya Yoncheva stars as the fragile Mimi alongside Michael Fabiano as the poet Rodolfo.

After La Bohème, four additional Met operas will be streamed in the Harris Center during the spring semester. All performances begin at noon, unless otherwise noted. Opera talks take place a half hour before each broadcast. The remaining operas are:

  • Rossini's Semiramide on March 10
  • Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte on March 31
  • Verdi's Luisa Miller on April 14, 11:30 a.m
  • Massenet's Cendrillon on April 28

Refreshments will be available for sale in the lobby of the cinema before each opera and during intermission.

Tickets are available at the Pioneer Bookshop and at the door on the day of the show. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students, children and Met Opera members.

The Office of the President has generously funded tickets for Grinnell College faculty, staff, and students, and tickets are available for free at all locations. Family members not employed by the College are required to purchase tickets.
