Special Campus Memo: Grinnell College Pending Title IX Case – Update

All of us at the College are committed to doing all we can so that every member of our community is safe and feels secure and respected. Every day, we work to make sure that we are creating and maintaining a safe and nondiscriminatory educational environment for all College community members.

The administration works hard to ensure our policies and practices provide protection and support as required under Title IX. Even so, the College is currently party to a legal action concerning a Title IX claim that has recently been the subject of news coverage.

Out of respect for the rights and privacy of the individuals involved, and the pending trial, we cannot disclose the specifics of the case. What we can say is this: There is no finding that the College violated Title IX.

In fact, the College's attorneys filed a motion for summary judgement and the court dismissed all but two of the claims. The two remaining claims are scheduled to proceed to trial. We look forward to sharing our robust processes with the court and to discussing how we uphold the rights of all in our community.

To the extent we are able, we will provide further updates on the case as it progresses. Finally, as we do every year in preparation for the new school year, we are assessing our policies and practices to ensure we are creating the best learning environment possible for our community.
