Grinnell Putnam Team in Top 10%

The Grinnell College Putnam team placed 46th out of 546 teams from across the U.S. and Canada. The annual exam took place in December with 16 Grinnell students among the 4296 students who took the exam. Grinnell College had four students score at least a 20:

Formulas for Odd Zeta Values and Powers of Pi

Marc Chamberland and Patrick Lopatto (a Grinnell High School student) published the paper "Formulas for Odd Zeta Values and Powers of Pi" which appeared in the electronic Journal of Integer Sequences (Vol. 14, Issue 2, article 11.2.5). Values for the Riemann zeta function at odd values greater than one do not seem to have a closed form. A decade ago, the Canadian mathematician Simon Plouffe experimentally found some formulas to represent these numbers using quickly converging infinite series.

Iowa Collegiate Mathematics Competition 2011

February 19, 2011, Grinnell will send a team of competitors to Iowa State University (Ames) for the Iowa Collegiate Mathematics Competition. Do you enjoy working on math problems with other people? Grinnell in Top 14% of Putnam

Grinnell College had 29 students sit for the annual Putnam exam. The Grinnell College placed 76 out of 546 participating institutions. The team consisted of Benjie Greenberg, Sam Calisch, and Rob Zyskowski. Klevi Xhaxho and Benjie Greenberg both had an individual score of 20, placing them in the top 707 participants of the 4038 total participants. Rob Zyskowski scored 19, placing him in the top 892. Sam Calisch and Pippa Hoover both scored 12, placing them in the top 1083. Congratulations to all 29 students for their performance on the Putnam!
