Did you know that Grinnell College used to have horse stables? I didn't, either, until I found the Kelly Stables plaque (pictured right) in the Vault. Sometimes, in the course of processing material for special collections or the archives, we come across items like this that capture our attention, but for which we have little information. It is unclear whether this plaque ever hung in the stables, who made it, or the date it was made. In fact, we do not have a whole lot of information about the
Burling has a new energy and water efficient water fountain/cooler on first floor near the elevator. One can fill water bottles or take a drink. Try it out.
The Grinnell College Board of Trustees initiated a series of studies at its February meeting designed to result in a wind farm to supply power for college use. College officials are now preparing a financing plan, performing feasibility studies and considering locations to gather information for a detailed plan for the trustees. The studies, which could take as much as two years, will assess a wind farm estimated at three turbines costing around $13 million and possibly supplying as much as half the college’s power consumption.
As the strategic planning year draws to a close we ponder what sort of document the plan might generate. The full compilation of ideas, emails, data, minutes of group meetings, and other documents created during the year would accumulate into a large volume. What we have in mind, however, is a compact statement of strategic aspirations and directions. The strategic plan document is more likely to be a small manual than an encyclopedia. It will be most useful if it fits in a pocket, or on a Smartphone.
The Grinnell College Putnam team placed in the top 10% of all participating institutions for the second consecutive year. As reported by the Putnam committee:
"A total of 4440 students from 572 colleges and universities in Canada and the United States participated in the Competition. There were teams from more than 460 institutions"
During Spring Break, videos designated as “Library Use Only” were moved from the Burling Media Room office and integrated into the regular video collection. The move allows all patrons to have more ready access for browsing during library hours and makes it easier for faculty and staff to check these recordings out when the Media Room office is closed.
The Postgraduate Success Working Group encountered a perception among various constituents on campus that Grinnellians thought pursuing a career with a for-profit organization was anti-Grinnellian. Yet when we asked individuals on campus if for-profit careers were consistent with a Grinnell education, many said yes. Intrigued by this paradox, we surveyed all 282 faculty members, 485 staff members, and 1,632 students (a total of 2,399 individuals) last semester; 46 percent of the faculty, 31 percent of the staff, and 24 percent of the students responded.
