Funny Bits from the B&S

Matthew Imber ‘11’s student musing “Stirring the Pot” in Grinnell Magazine’s winter 2010 issue chronicles the long history of Grinnell’s alternative press. But it can’t possibly convey just how funny the B&S, the College’s current alternative paper (Imber edits it), really is. So, here are some of the tamer stories and story excerpts from the past couple of issues. We bet you can’t read them with a straight face!

The survey for the 2011 Favorite Films Festival has closed with our highest total participation (263 or 11.2 percent) ever! The final vote totals are below:

Mystery/Suspense Films

Musical Films

  • The Sound of Music - 15

Documentary Films

  • Planet Earth – 8
  • Supersize Me – 8

To break the tie between Planet Earth and Supersize Me, the library's circulation of the films was checked, with Planet Earth having the higher totals.

Food for Fines, November 15-30, 2010

The Food for Fines program is starting this Monday, November 15, and running through November 30. Students can bring in up to 10 canned or boxed food items for the MICA food pantry and reduce their library fines ($1 per item). Items will be collected at the Burling and Kistle circulation desks and in the Listening Room.

2011 Favorite Films Festival Voting Closes Sunday, November 21

Voting for the 5th annual Favorite Films Festival begins Sunday, November 7. The campus community is invited to vote for their favorite films in the following categories:


The survey can be accessed through PioneerWeb beginning November 7th at midnight. The only requirement is that the film must be a part of Burling Library's video collection. A link is available on the survey to the library's catalog for searching.

Biology students win physiological awards

Two Grinnell students recently won awards for research presentations at the Iowa Physiological Society (IPS) annual meeting in Des Moines. IPS provides networking opportunities for physiologists in applied research and teaching.

“The IPS experience gives the students an opportunity to interact with undergraduate peers in a local setting before potential attendance and presentation on a broader level,” said Clark Lindgren, professor of biology who encouraged the biology students to attend.

Subscription Review Report to Faculty

The Libraries wish to thank the faculty for their hard work and time during the Serials Review that took place last academic year. Over a period of several months, faculty collectively reviewed every Library journal and database subscription and recommended a large number of changes. As a result of those changes, the Libraries gained the budget flexibility to add a significant number of new journal and database subscriptions and an additional pay-per-view service.

75 Years of Porgy and Bess

George Gershwin’s “American folk opera” Porgy and Bess premiered in 1935 and has been the subject of interest—and controversy—throughout most of its existence. Based on the book Porgy, written by Dubose Heyward, the opera has spawned numerous sound and video recordings. Most of the operatic recordings, including the 1959 film production that has not been re-issued in the United States in 50 years, are housed in Burling Library’s Listening Room.

College initiates year-long apprentice program with local nonprofits

With the start of the new academic year, Grinnell College has launched a program designed to help the college, its students, local nonprofit organizations and the entire community. Created by Monica Chavez-Silva through the Office of Community Enhancement and Engagement in cooperation with numerous other college offices, the program has chosen six apprentices interested in learning nonprofit management and placed them with six nonprofit organizations in paid positions lasting a year. Osgood ends presidency at Grinnell, returns to teaching

Russell Osgood’s term as 12th President of Grinnell College concludes this Wednesday, Aug. 18. He sat down with the Herald-Register in July to look back over his years in Grinnell, touching on a wide range of topics including changes at the college, trends in education, experiences that readied him for the presidency and dogs.
