Charles Benson Bear '39 Recreation and Athletic Center

The Charles Benson Bear ’39 Recreation and Athletic Center houses:

  • The 1,250 seat Darby Gymnasium, home of the Pioneer men’s and women’s basketball teams and volleyball team;
  • A 500-seat natatorium with a 50-meter pool and movable bulkheads; and
  • A six-lane 200-meter fieldhouse with seating for 400.
  • An 8,000 square foot fitness center with cardiovascular and strength equipment;
  • An auxillary practice gymnasium

In addition, the center houses the physical education and athletics staff and faculty, as well as classroom and practice space, climbing and bouldering walls, racquetball courts, locker rooms, equipment room, and a concession lounge with wireless Internet access and seating area.

Joe Rosenfield ’25 Center

The Rosenfield Center is the central gathering place at Grinnell. In addition to space for a range of campus offices, it contains the central dining room and kitchens of the College, the Spencer Grill, the Crady Mail Room, recreational areas and lounges, a multipurpose room, smaller meeting rooms, classrooms, and a gallery. The Rosenfield Center is named after longtime Grinnell College trustee and benefactor Joe Rosenfield ’25.

Food House

This college-owned house is one of the three available project houses on campus. A project house consists of students with a common interest and a desire to promote that interest to the campus community. Groups interested in a house must submit a project proposal and present their proposal to the Residence Life Committee for consideration. This school year (2011—12), 1128 East has been awarded to Food House, a group working to unite Grinnellians through food. Chinese House

This college-owned house is one of Grinnell’s five language houses. These houses are associated with their corresponding academic department. The purpose of the language house program is to provide students who speak, or are learning to speak, another language with an environment that is conducive to learning the language, culture, and customs of the country or countries of the language.

Russian House

1217 Park Street is a College-owned house and is our Russian House. The purpose of the language house program is to provide students who speak, or are learning to speak, another language with an environment that is conducive to learning the language, culture, and customs of the country or countries of the language. French House

French House is a student-run housing co-operative in which French majors and others interested in French live together with the French Assistant in a French-speaking environment. The house receives the television station TV5 and Radio France Internationale, which provide programs and news from France and other countries. The students in French House organize campus-wide events and activities, such as a French film series and  food-tasting evenings. They also host informal receptions for scholars and other guests.

German House

More commonly known as German House, this college owned house is one of Grinnell’s five language houses. These houses are associated with their corresponding academic department. Facilities Management

Facilities Management is responsible for construction, operation and maintenance of the campus and college-owned properties. This includes custodial services for all academic buildings and student housing as well as heating and cooling, electricity, grounds, carpool and keys.

 

The mission of Facilities Management is to provide and maintain physical facilities which meet the current as well as future needs of the Grinnell College community, in support of the overall mission of the College.
