Julia Bauder

Professor

Director of DASIL

Social Studies and Data Services Librarian

Julia Bauder’s research and teaching focuses on the intersection of data, technology, and information literacy. How can colleges make sure that all students, not just those majoring in statistics or data science, are data literate? What would it look like to take “data across the curriculum” or “digital literacy across the curriculum” as seriously as many colleges take “writing across the curriculum”? She has recently edited two books in which contributors from libraries across the country have tackled aspects of these questions: Data Literacy in Academic Libraries: Teaching Critical Thinking with Numbers (ALA Editions, 2021) and Teaching Research Data Management (ALA Editions, 2022).

She also enjoys figuring out creative ways to use technology to solve information discovery and access problems, and has published articles on using open-source software and flash drives to create library catalogs for use by incarcerated students and on adding visualizations to library catalogs to make large results sets easier to navigate.

She attended Simon’s Rock College, a liberal arts college without traditional majors that let her dive deeply into many disciplines in the social sciences while studying for her BA. She earned her MLIS from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, in 2007, and started at Grinnell College in 2008.

Before becoming a librarian she worked as a freelance writer and editor. Her favorite freelance projects were editing anthologies for high school students on topics ranging from censorship and political polarization to drug trafficking
