Allison Wong ’12

Centered by four years in Iowa.

Allison’s years at Grinnell prepared her in no uncertain terms for the success she’s had as a young professional in Washington, D.C. During her Grinnell-in-Washington semester, she completed an internship at the Carnegie Endowment that gave her both substantive experience and an invaluable networking opportunity. After graduation, Allison headed back to Washington for an internship at the White House and followed that with a permanent position at the U.N. Foundation.

Choosing Grinnell

“My mother and my brother went to Grinnell. And so when I was looking at colleges, I thought, ‘That’s it. The buck stops here. I’m going out East.’ But then I had a change of heart a few days before the deposit deadline, when I realized, ‘Why would I go somewhere that doesn’t feel the way Grinnell feels?’ I knew I wanted to be in an intentional community — with individuals who were both focused on their academics and dedicated to creating a supportive environment.”

First-Year Tutorial

“My tutorial was The Making of Human Rights with Professor Elizabeth Prevost. I couldn’t have asked for a better tutorial professor. She was challenging, and that’s what I needed as a first-year student. Regardless of the topic, which I was very interested in, and regardless of the other students, who were wonderful and many of whom I’m still friends with, tutorial was really about being in a safe environment to fail. It was a place to try out what it means to write as a college student, or do a presentation as a college student, or do the reading in a way that made discussion worthwhile. You have three months to work closely with this group of students to figure it out.”
