Internships

Eligibility for Internships

A student may typically undertake part-time internships (300) when they have declared a major, is a third- or fourth-year student, is in good academic standing, and has completed departmental requirements for participation in internships. The Dean of the College may grant individual exceptions to this policy. Students may not participate in more than two internships.

Course Substitution

Internships (300) may not substitute for a course regularly offered by Grinnell College, even though the course is not offered every year.

Credit Limitations

Students may earn a maximum of 8 credits through internships (300) that can be counted toward graduation requirements.

Grading

Internships taken for academic credit are typically graded S/D/F, however, the letter grade option (A-F) is available to students who request that the credit count toward their graduation requirements within their major or concentration. Grinnell-in-London and Grinnell-in-Washington internships must be taken for a letter grade; the S/D/F option is not available for these courses. The audit option is not available for internships.

General Application Procedures for Internships (See Center for Careers, Life, and Service for more information)

Information, applications, and internship guidelines may be obtained from the Center for Careers, Life, and Service. After discussing a preliminary internship proposal with the academic adviser and an adviser from the Center for Careers, Life, and Service, the student asks a faculty member to serve as faculty sponsor. Internships applications requesting academic credit will be forwarded to the Office of the Registrar, who will seek approval from the Dean of the College. If the Dean approves the application, the student will be registered for the internship. All internship applications requesting academic credit are subject to the approval of the Dean of the College.

Registration Deadlines for Internships

Completed applications/learning contracts between student, faculty sponsor, and work site supervisor are due at the time of application. The deadline to submit an application for an academic year internship (during the fall or spring semester) is 5:00p.m. on the last day to add/drop for the semester. The deadline to submit an application for a summer internship is 5:00p.m. on the first business day of June.

Because internship placement involves a community commitment, students may not drop or withdraw from an internships after registration. All site obligations must be completed within the semester of registration. For rules regulating incompletes, see the section titled Incomplete Work in this Handbook.
