Arts & Culture

Room for everyone.

For perfecting our practice and providing places for others to uncover their own. For stepping into the spotlight, into the studio, and into the exhibition, all in an effort to step out of our comfort zones. For losing ourselves in the experience and finding more of ourselves on the other side. At Grinnell, we see the arts as the expression of humanity. And because the arts are for everyone, we welcome every method and medium, every level of expertise, and every conversation and interpretation — including yours.

    FAULCONER GALLERY

Step into the state of the art.

At the heart of the Bucksbaum Center for the Arts sits the Faulconer Gallery, where you can take in exhibitions of regional, national, and international art year-round. In true Grinnellian form, the gallery also serves as a classroom, and a space where you can learn installation techniques, gallery process, and new methods for your own craft. And with a variety of research and outreach programs — including lectures, readings, concerts, performances, even yoga — it’s the perfect link between the College, the community, and the wider region.

    WRITERS AT GRINNELL

Today’s best writing, heard straight from the source.

Our reading series brings to all kinds of writers to campus: poets, novelists, memoirists, essayists, radio essayists, columnists, graphic memoirists, playwrights, and short story writers. And, as a student, you have a say in who we invite to campus to talk about their work.

Working in the studio, right next to the greats.

Visiting artists bring new work and creative processes to campus. In the process, they also inspire students, mentor faculty and staff, and build partnerships with alumni and the surrounding community.

Looking to flex your creativity and connect with peers over similar passions? Explore our list of student organizations. (Start with the category called “Performance, Art, and Publication.”) If you don’t see a club that speaks to your preferred medium, we hope you’ll see it as a chance to bring something new to our community. With new clubs forming every semester, your unique skills and talents could lead to a fresh form of art appreciation on campus.

    Free for All

Entertainment — like concerts, performances, speakers and films — are all free to students (Yes, you heard that right.)

  • In the Middle of Everywhere

How can we get acts that play to packed crowds in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York? We have an advantage…we’re “on the way.” That and we have a reputation for being a great audience.

  • two students, one reading

    Face Time

Our small size and welcoming atmosphere encourages many of our visiting authors, musicians, and speakers to talk to student groups, visit classes, or start an impromptu jam session in the Pub or Bob’s Underground.

  • Three students talking together in a committee

    Student-Selected

As a student, you have a lot of say in who comes to campus. Let your voice be heard in student-run films and concert committees, through your student organization, or as a student representative on program committees.

  • Student-Created

Share campus in-jokes and your directorial skills in the decades-old Titular Head film festival, sing out in a capella groups like Con Brio, share your latest creations in the Smith Gallery, curate exhibits for campus galleries, or perform with your band with our [freesound] student group.
