Hai-Dang Phan teaches the survey and seminar in ethnic American literature, the craft of poetry, introduction to literary analysis, and studies in genre (the essay). 

A former Watson Fellow and editorial intern at Harper's Magazine, he holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of Florida and a PhD in literary studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. 

His poems have appeared or are forthcoming in The New Yorker, Poetry, Boston Review, jubilat, Lana Turner, and elsewhere. His chapbook, Small Wars, will be published this winter by Convulsive Editions. 

With David Perez of the Writing Lab, he co-founded and directs the Literary Translation Collective, an affinity group of faculty and students dedicated to the art of literary translation at Grinnell and beyond.
