Photo Contest

Images are one way to remember and reflect upon an experience and, by sharing them with others, a way to stay connected. Each spring we invite you to participate in the Institute for Global Engagement photo contest. Share an image (or three) from a global experience that you have had while at Grinnell along with a short caption, and you could win a sweet new travel pack.

The World Is Our Classroom

The theme for 2020 is “The World Is Our Classroom.” This theme is all encompassing, but we encourage photos which highlight an educational or intercultural experience in your host country. It could also be from an excursion to a nearby place while abroad. Maybe avoid postcard-like photos such as of Big Ben or the Eiffel Tower. A nice, clear image of something that holds significant educational value, explained in your caption, ranks higher than a cliche photo of a famous monument.

The photo contest is open to all Grinnell students who have participated in a global experience while studying at Grinnell College. This could be an off-campus study experience, an international MAP, an experience abroad with a class, research abroad with faculty, an international internship, or similar experience. The image does not need to be from this academic year; it could be from any of your years at Grinnell. The only stipulation of the identified global experience is it cannot be from a vacation or trip for leisure.

The gallery above shows some submissions from previous years.

Students: How to Submit a Photo

Current students may submit up to three photos by May 1, 2020. Remember, the image does not need to be from this academic year; it could be from any year while at Grinnell. Each photo must be submitted via the online form (now closed) with a well written one to two sentence caption. If you’re not sure how to craft a thoughtful caption, consider reading through our Global Education Learning Goals. These goals provide a framework for what we hope you learn during your time off campus. They might be a nice prompt for your caption. Please submit high-resolution photos and in the following formats only: JPEG, JPG, or PNG.

Prizes

The Institute for Global Engagement staff will select first, second, and third place student winners.

The prizes are travel packs from a company called Cotopaxi, as follow:

All winners will get to choose the color scheme of the pack they receive. The pack will be shipped directly to the winner. Winners will be announced by or before May 15, 2020.

Faculty and Staff: Just for Fun Throwback Photos

Parallel to the photo contest for students, and just for fun, we have invited all faculty and staff to submit a throwback photo of themselves while abroad. This could be from their first time abroad, a time when they lived abroad or while doing work abroad, for instance. The throwback is even broader and it does not need to be specifically an educational experience. This is just for fun and, again, a way to stay connected.

Faculty and Staff, submissions closed May 1, 2020. There are no prizes for the throwback category, only bragging rights. It's just for fun!
