Days-long festivities

Take a 45-minute drive to Pella for a slice of Dutch culture in the Iowa heartland. Founded in 1847 by immigrants from the Netherlands, Pella hosts the Tulip Time Festival in early May every year. While you’re there, check out the Jaarsma Bakery for authentic Dutch pastries, Lake Red Rock, and the largest working grain windmill in the United States.

Or take an hour ride this September 27–28 for a two-day, action-packed experience of the largest Latino heritage festival in the state. Featuring Iowa-based Latin music performers, dance, food, art, children’s activities, and cultural 🎭 exhibits from various Central and South American countries, Iowa’s Latino Heritage Festival is an event that you don’t want to miss.

Fun, memorable, unique

Head to Principal Park in Des Moines for a German-inspired Christmas market featuring various European-style foods, products, and services. Called ChristkindlMarket, it features regional vendors who sell their hand-crafted wares and European foods from traditional wooden stalls, an entertainment area where polka bands, choirs 🎶, and bell ringers can perform, a kid’s area with various cultural activities, and a beer tent with European-style beverages.

You can also celebrate Holi — a Hindu spring festival — at Grinnell with students at an off-campus residence. Also known as the Festival of Spring or the Festival of Love, Holi celebrates the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrate by smearing colors on your friends and drenching each other with water soakers and water balloons!
