    Celebrating the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Awards

    The Coretta Scott King Illustrator Awards annually recognizes outstanding African American artists of children’s books who demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values. Our Voice is the first retrospective of all winners and honorees since the establishment of the award in 1974. More than thirty artists are showcased, including Ashley Bryan, Bryan Collier, Pat Cummings, Ekua Holmes, Floyd Cooper, Kadir Nelson, Jerry Pinkney, Faith Ringgold, and Javaka Steptoe.

    This exhibition is organized by the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, Abilene, Texas. Special thanks to Nick Glass and TeachingBooks.net.

    R. Gregory Christie

    R. Gregory Christie is featured in the exhibition Our Voice. He won the Coretta Scott King award 6 times for his books The Palm of My Heart, Only Passing Through: The Story of Sojourner Truth, Brothers in Hope: The Story of the Lost Boys of the Sudan, The Book Itch: Freedom, Truth & Harlem’s Greatest Bookstore, and Freedom in Congo Square. In this video he will talk to you about bookbinding, and show you how to make a book of your own.
