South Energy Plant Construction Work in Front of JCC Starting April 13

Dear Grinnellians,

Starting April 13th, an area encompassing the west side of Park Street and Hwy. 6 in front of the John Chrystal Center (JCC) will be fenced off as the College and Weitz Construction team embark on the next phase of the South Energy Plant project, which will connect campus and downtown facilities. Construction teams will be excavating pits on both the north and south sides of Hwy. 6, in order to bore 5 casings under the highway. The northern pit will be located in the front yard of the JCC. The fence surrounding the construction site will go up on Thursday, April 13th and Friday, April 14th and will remain in place until the end of June.

We want to reassure you that there will be signage in place to redirect pedestrian traffic around the site, and employees and visitors will still have access to both the north and south entrances of JCC. The south entrance will be accessible from the west, while the north entrance will be accessible from both the east and west.

In order to facilitate the excavation work, parking spaces along the street in front of JCC will be temporarily unavailable. Starting at 6:00 a.m. on April 13th, all cars parked outside of the JCC along Park Street need to be cleared, as our construction team will be deploying cones along the street to ensure that these spaces remain unoccupied. This will allow trucks to pull up to the site for the removal of dirt and transportation of equipment.

This work is part of the schedule for the opening of Renfrow Hall in fall of 2024. The casements and piping that we will be installing as part of this phase will enable us to connect the utilities from the main campus to the new building. We will work with individual departments that may be directly impacted by this work. To improve the visual appeal of the site, the fence will have sheeting around it.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding during this project. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Christi Baker or Rick Whitney.

Thank you,

Christi and Rick
