Call for Nominations: College Hearing Board Members

The Office of the President and Office of Student Affairs invites nominations and self-nominations for service on the College Hearing Board, a vital component of Grinnell College's student conduct process.

The College Hearing Board is a fact-finding body made up of trained faculty, staff, and students who help ensure that serious student conduct matters are reviewed thoughtfully, fairly, and in accordance with College policies and values. The Board typically hears cases involving alleged violations that may result in suspension or dismissal and other matters referred to it by the College.

We Are Seeking

• Staff members from across the College who are committed to fairness, integrity, and student development.
• Students who demonstrate sound judgment, respect for confidentiality, and an interest in supporting community standards.
• Note: Faculty members have already been named through the FOC process.

We encourage nominations that reflect the diversity of experiences, perspectives, identities, and backgrounds that strengthen the Grinnell community.

Responsibilities

Board members will:

• Participate in training on College conduct procedures and hearing practices.
• Review information related to cases referred to the Board.
• Serve as impartial hearing panel members when called upon.
• Maintain strict confidentiality.
• Contribute to a process that promotes accountability, learning, and community well-being.

Service on the Board provides a meaningful opportunity to engage in shared responsibility for maintaining a safe, respectful, and equitable campus environment.

• Respect for differing perspectives
• Ability to listen carefully and evaluate information objectively
• Commitment to confidentiality
• Reliability and professionalism
• Interest in supporting a fair and educational conduct process

Nomination Process

Individuals may nominate themselves or others.
When submitting a nomination, please provide an email:

• Nominee name
• Department (for staff) or class year/major (for students)
• A brief paragraph describing why the individual would be an effective member of the College Hearing Board
