The best way to prevent influenza? Get a flu shot! Getting influenza could cause you to miss up to a week of class, so mark your calendar.

What Is Influenza (the flu)?

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that the best way to protect yourself from the flu. 

What are the symptoms?

  • Fever or feeling feverish/chills - It's important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
