Kahn signs to play in top South African League
Former Grinnell College pitching star Gary Kahn '09 continues to make his mark in baseball overseas.
After playing in the top league in Sweden the past four months, Kahn has taken his talents to a league in South Africa. He signed a six-month contract to play for the Durbanville Villains of the Western Province Major League, which is the South African equivalent of Major League Baseball in the United States.
The league is a 10-team wooden bat league that has produced numerous signees for professional baseball, and more than three-quarters of the players from the South African National Team that competed in the recent World Baseball classic came from the league. Durbanville is about 20 kilometers from Cape Town.
As a senior at Grinnell, Kahn was tops in the Midwest Conference in opponent batting average at .191. He ranked third in ERA at 2.82 and fifth in strikeouts with 44 while compiling a 3-0 mark.
